Wild boar Hunting.. "on a hunters Moon" This Hunt started out with a call from the wife of Larry asking if it was a good idea for giving a hunt as a Christmas present. Of course it is and those are special wives deciding to keep there hubbies out on a hunt. You Guys should cherish them. Other guys who like hunt stop hunting due to the wives opinions. Hunting is the all American sport after baseball and boxing, that is my opinion. Anyway the hunt started out on a good day with great weather in the 60's with the wind at our favor. We have been hit a a good drought and the animals where running everywhere. As usual hogs come out between dusk to dawn and move in packs. So I decided to place each one at different crossings at the ranch. So that is when Murphy's law started to apply. Hogs there where, boars where out of bow and muzzleloader reach.
Late on the first night we spotted a boar of over 300lbs chasing a sow yet, between us and them was several Corsicans that owned the sendero. as we waited for over an hour the boar suddenly stopped looked at us and everything disappeared. The following morning we tried
sitting at different blinds to catch a hogs crossing senderos. I told both Kurt
and Larry that I would pick them up about 8:30 in the morning to drive the
ranch. As Larry and I were about Thirty yards from Kurt's blind, we saw him set
down the rifle and take aim.
Quickly we searched with the binos to see a pack of twenty hogs on the road. Then we realized it was four sows with piglets. Again are plans of bagging a boar went sour, but that is hunting. We decided to head for lunch a take a break for several hours. Trying our luck again in the evening.
We head out around 4:30pm due to the fact
that the whole day was just out of wack. The moon was
As I headed for Kurt's blind I heard a solid shot echo at Larry's direction. Kurt tells me Larry hit a hog. While driving towards Larry we see him standing over the hog. He dropped a hog of 170 lbs in its tracks. We headed back to the cleaning area to hang the hog and return to get a full glance at the light pastures due to the weird bright light of a half moon. After driving we all looked at the
sky to get a glance at a moon in circled by a thin row of clouds. It looked like
an eye. Driving down the lit sendero we saw the silhouettes of a pack of
mouflon rams ramming. the sound and the color of the lit ground was absolutely
grand.
Trying the wounded jackrabbit call, fifteen minutes past when a blur ran past the sendero about fifty yards. Questioning the blur on what it was we drove off to gain better distance at the other end of the pasture. To our surprise the blur was about 100 yards in full view. I told Kurt as I hit the lights shot the coyote in the sendero. With hesitation Kurt took the shot and bagged a great bobcat. Granted it doe not get better that this to bag "the shadow that walks" as the Indians name for bobcat. Another great hunt with good hunts and new friendships....
