Thorns, Rocks and a Great Shots The day ended with four gold Medal Trophies, excellent shots and jokes. We started out late on the evening of November 2. Searching for several Brush Rams. We saw several herds with a nice Painted desert in the mix. After driving we decide to go after hogs when a 6 curl blackbuck jolted in front of us. A great animal that would make any trophy room proud. as soon as the buck cleared the sendero Mr. Roberts says, "that's what I want." As we drove on we spooked several Mouflons rams which knew why we were there and drove up to a great yak Bull. We decided to call it a night after hogs gave us the slip. Early the next morning everyone was anxious. I told everyone decide on the type of ram you all want and so we have a better chance of harvesting what we want. BJ the oldest said I want that Painted
Desert we saw yesterday. So the game was on. as we By the time we reached the end of the sendero the rams had ran about another 800 yards or so into a mess of cactus. We stopped and started over to the rams. We saw the rams 50 yard in front of us and a young Catalina Billy spotted us and ran past the herd. On the first clear shot Greg had he dropped the ram in its tracks and all we saw was the dust of the herd as the shot rang. As we head for camp we saw two great blackbucks standing in front us taunting us to shoot. Once again as we drove we saw tail fly down the sendero doing 40. Deciding to go for lunch we talked about what we want and how to hunt them. Blackbuck was number one on everyone's mind.
As we drove down a sendero a huge Black buck stood about 250 yards into a clearing. As we stopped the buck darted off in a hurry. the dust had not hit the ground when Mr. Roberts tells me, "we will get one, I am telling you we will get one." heading down another sendero we see three two good blackbucks with a great blackbuck walking past us in a hurry. As i stopped to look and the buck in the middle I said that the one. My words were meet with a blast of a 460 SW pistol who dropped the buck in its track at 45 yards. Passing up several red sheep in the brush
we spot a herd of young axis bucks. Who high tailed it off once more. Their
stampede brought a herd of rams into view. With that herd was ht painted
desert BJ was looking for.
As we drove for a closer look the rams head for an open field which was perfect for a good shot. there were about fifteen rams in the mix about 150 yards into the field. A Mouflon came running in bellowing the famed warning. They all started running which lined up the group for a good shot, with out hitting another ram. The rams slowed down which gave BJ an excellent shot. His 300 mag brought don a great gold medal painted desert ram. While heading back to camp Dusty says I know what I want a Texas Dall. We had seen four good Texas Dalls earlier and one was with a mess of Mouflons which we had named rocky. Rocky had a set of horns and we had seen him bucking head for well of 45 minutes against every mouflon in the field. We dropped off the animals for there coats not to ruin and headed off o find our Last Ram. We spotted one and decided to stalk it. 30 minutes later we walked out of the brush without a ram. Once again we ran up on another gold medal Texas Dall and it slipped out of our reach.
We drive and follow the sendero past the field where we last saw the ram and there stood Rocky looking at us with a perfect shot. This was great hunt that featured good company with a group of brother and a father that enjoy hunting. That is truly our American heritage. that we should protect.
