Stalking the Elusive Mouflon Ram

The hunt started out with great Hunters choosing the fact of the big Mouflons on there mind. Allen Hicks From Ft. Worth Texas and Writer Gayne  Young of Texas Safari Magazine were head strong on Mouflon Rams.

AS I explained to the hunters that rams are built a bit different than other game that both understood a perfect well placed shot or have a ram that would run for well over a mile and hours to harvest.

We started out with a safari style hunt by driving the senderos. Where we saw everything from 6-curl blackbucks to a great bison bull taking an afternoon bath.

As we drove we spotted a herd of 17 mature Mouflon rams, which they were all in the 30 inch horn bracket.

Mr Allen Hicks was on a hunt that was helping the Shriner Children's Hospital of Ft. Worth Texas. His generosity is giving hope to children from all over the World. He was first to hunt Mouflon. The hunt Started out on Monday with us spotting 5 good rams in the brush.

As we started our stalk, as we arrived at our mark picking our ram seconds away form the shot, a ram in the brush caught our wind and the herd took off like a bolt of lighting. Allen and laughed and said lets do it again.

Many hunters do not realize the difficulty of shooting trophy rams, first you have around ten pairs of eyes looking at you that are from ewes, second you have around three mature rams and several young rams looking and knowing your every move.

If you are lucky to get to a herd of bachelor rams then it might be easier. Maybe if the stars, the moon, the wind, and good luck is on your side. Basically you are looking a stalk of around three to five hours, in order to bag your ram.

After searching the senderos for another herd two hours had past. about 11:30 in the morning we spot another herd with three good rams. The rams were about 150 yards inside the brush when suddenly bang the bolted again this time giving us around 125 yard spot.

Finally around 2:30  in the afternoon we see a small herd in the brush. this time we stalked the rams for a shot of 150 yards. Allen made his mark with a great shot that dropped the ram cold in its tracks.

We decided to have lunch and take a break to start looking for the ram of Gayne Young of Texas Safari Magazine.  As we searched the back pasture the every Mouflon and red sheep ram knew why we were there. All we saw was the white patch of running in the brush.

During our outing we spotted a huge Black Hawaiian which measures well into the 38 to 40 inch bracket. This ram is for the true head hunter. We also saw a top ten Royal Yak and countless of brush rams that where in the silver or Gold Medal categories.

We ran up several Mouflons but without prevail, as dusk turned to to night we decided to co in the morning. Again we started of on the wrong foot every Mouflon we saw was doing about 35 to 40 in the brush.

The 110 heat was our allied since the herds stopped running but gave us spots of 200 yards and such. We spotted a great ram in the back of the herd and decided that it was know or never. we waited for well over an hour to get a good shot.

The rams started to trot away and the rams we were on was the forth to the last. It was the chance that could not be past up. Gayne took the shot and the ram buckled and ran off in the sendero. We started off and sure enough the blood was thick and heavy as we followed the blood trail for over 75 yards, the ram was on the ground.

Two great hunters that took home with them two great Gold Medal Mouflon Rams.
