Getting gold in the hills Pongola

As our Safari went on my Uncle and I decide to try our luck with Common Reedbucks. As soon a we said that we spotted not a single buck in the hills. Which only days earlier that was all we had seen beside the great nyalas in the bush.

We talked about the horn size and the type of bucks that we wanted. Ph Conroy stated that the Common Reedbuck was an impressive trophy for any hunter to have. Since they are similar to our Texas Whitetail bucks.

As the evening approached we saw a buck with several females on the side of the hills which brought our attention towards the reedbucks a bit further.

They gave us about five minutes and Ph Con tells us we can surely do better on the size. That is the reason that we have come back to Hunt with Safari SA and Ph Conroy Hallgren. The amount of precise judgment on the trophies that you the hunter will have.

I have seen many guides/Phs place shot pressure and make the hunter shoot the first animal of the specie that the hunter is hunting. That is not the case with this excellent Safari Company. In which we will be promoting their hunts through our Ranch in Texas.

Early on the following morning we decide to look in the back hills of sondaba to see if we could spot any movement. We had not driven five miles when our tracker Mfanass, tapped the roof and said there is a very good buck in the hill about 200 to 25 yards back.

I told Ph. Conroy its my uncles turn to shoot. As the walked back to the spot where they had seen the buck. The buck had traveled up the hill about another 300 feet higher.

I stayed in the land rover and waited about 30 to 40 minutes when I heard a shot . I knew it had hit by the sound. I waited another five minutes and started of to find them on them on the road. I saw my Uncle walking down the hill and Mfanass walking up.

With the smile on the face of my Uncle's. I knew that the ram was good. When I saw the Reedbuck up close. the horn size was an easy gold in several of the Scoring books.

The went on and I heard the same tap on the roof by our tracker. We stopped and Mfanass tells us there is a big reedbuck about 300 yards back. We stated down the road when stop he is looking at us. I swear I could not see the buck in the reeds, about 200 yards up the hill. Then Mfanass tells me you see the horns.

He was sitting down and the only thing you could see were its horns. I can not believe how you can actually see an animal, measure the size, with only seeing the horns while driving. I got ready since the buck had seen us. I drilled the buck in the neck which felled the animal.

Another great gold medal trophy to our bag of trophies.

After the fact of easily bringing down a hard animals to harvest. The following story is about understanding the inns and outs of buck fever, missed shots, excuses and most important  controlling understanding you rifle.

On my safari last year in the east cape I saw a small antelope about the size of a black buck. That looked very much like our Texas hill country deer. It was the Mountain Reedbuck.

I must have had some bad mojo, since I missed that animal at least 7 times last year. every single one I saw would some how turn before the bullet struck it.

Well this safari started much in the same way. I had basically left Texas with a brand new Rifle a 26 inch Thompson Contender in a 375 H&H. The scope I had placed on it was a Pentax with mill lines at every 100 yards.

I was placed at the side of a hill around 200 yards of a good Mt. Reedbuck when I missed that darn thing.

The following morning Ph Con tells me in front of us around 150 yards in a good buck. Again a miss. Was mojo place on me. After a few cold ones at night and laughing i told everyone in the morning I am breaking the course by bringing home the biggest !&*$$%#@ Mt. Reedbuck you have yet to see.

Sure enough as we drove of from the camp about two miles out. That familiar tap was heard again. Mfanass tells Con there is a big big Mountain Reedbuck in the side on this hill.

AS we walked I saw the back and told con the spell would be broken. I aimed and bang the buck fell on its tracks. when we arrived where the back was. We all knew what we had. A hellacious buck for the records.

Once again trophies like this only come by the patience of both the hunter and especially the Professional Hunter in Africa.
