First Corsican on the first hunt This hunt started out with a phone call on how the hunting was at Las Auras Ranch by Troy Christensen of Christensen Arms. He told me he only had several days to hunt in Texas and how he was going to return to Utah. I basically told him what he or his son wanted to Hunt. He quickly tells me I would like a good Black Buck but I really want my son to get an animal on this trip. I am hunting at this time in Zavala County near Crystal City. I told him
ok, meet me tomorrow morning at the Ranch
and give me a full day. I can
When they got to the ranch , the day was foggy and with very little visibility, but the weather was said to be up to the mid 80's. We started out in a safari fashion hunt since the was the best thing to do due to the time situation. While driving we saw to silver medal fallow in the fog. We talked about them and how that would be a better hunt next year.
By 11 am we started to feel the heat and we stopped to look at a herd of Corsicans Black Hawaiians. To our amazement they started ramming each other for well over 30 minutes. and just like Murphy's Law the camera went dead. The ram which picked was in the back of the herd and now it was just a waiting game. The rams knew we were there and as soon as the banging stopped headed straight for the brush. We proceeded on foot which started 90 minute stalk. Again Murphy's law persisted, we crossed a mess of 30 to 40 hogs which ran every which way around us. Never had I been in a mess of pigs like that. When we finally came out of the brush the rams
had beat the pace to be around 300 yards in front. We decided to let
things rest a bit and take a break.
Later that day we saw three other group of rams one with a very fine Black Hawaiian and two Gold medal Texas Dall, but eyes were set on that ram. We came up on the Corsican Ram which stood in front of us at 75 yards. made a great shot between the front legs and the ram ran and fell twenty yards from the shot. One thing that I must say, " it is great to hunt with a father and son pair since the traditions and the responsibilities of a hunter are always passed on." I saw patience in a young hunter who listened and took the time to be on point. Congratulations again on your first hunt.
