Huge Sika Buck in the Sendero...
I knew we had him at last, as I saw the big Formosa Sika Buck shrug at the hit of the .308 . We had started out glassing for hogs and varmints. With no prevail to the early morning. Deciding to drive the senderos. We noticed the weather had changed to a light drizzle. While driving hunter James Long from Carrizo Springs, we talked about the animals that he wanted to hunt. Aoudad was in the top three, but we did not have the time and luck would have been our guide to harvest a big 30 inch Aoudad Ram. Blackbuck , Mouflon and Sika where at the top four . We saw a herd of Mouflons and waited to get a break with in the herd. With no shot in sight the rams turns and headed for the brush. While looking at the rams a huge blackbuck bolted in front of the herd which set them off. Here was the first animal on the list of trophies that hunter Long was looking for. The day had been long and every animals that we had set eyes upon would disappeared with in the brush or was on high gear. We saw several good sikas and the size was not at the silver or gold bracket. They were trophies but not what I want a hunter to take home. The day had started out windy to a light rain to 90 degrees by 3pm. We had seen several good trophies but the time and range was not right. While dusk was approaching we saw a nice Elk Bull walk the sendero and behind him about twenty yards a good sika walked out from the brush. We noticed he was a good buck by the size of the main beams. AS he walked by he was the main sika bull in the ranch I had seen him control the harem and young bucks. James said that the one I want. By that time the bull had crossed the sendero and was about 120 yards into the brush. James settled in and took the shot as the big Sika buck crossed a small opening. While walking up to the buck I noticed its size, it had good mass at the base and long main beams and I saw James with a huge smile as he knew what a trophy he had shot.
